Faculty
Maria Vakola (PhD) is Professor in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management and Director of the MSc Program in Human Resources Management at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece. She belongs to the top 2 percent of scientists worldwide according to the Stanford University citation list.
She has published in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Relations, the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and others, and she regularly presents her research in major international academic conferences.
Maria is the author of five books and editor of the HR Case Study Series, an initiative designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. She has more than 20 years of experience in executive training, consulting and European projects, collaborating with organizations across different sectors.
She has received awards for teaching excellence and research impact, and she frequently serves as a visiting lecturer at universities such as the University of Cyprus and Roma Business School.
Maria is also the co-founder of www.job-pairs.gr, a mentoring platform that has been recognized with awards for its significant social impact.
Pantelis Kammas is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of International and European Economic Studies (DIEES) at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from AUEB, where his dissertation examined international tax competition and the constraints that globalization places on the formulation and implementation of national fiscal policies. Prior to joining the faculty at AUEB, he held teaching positions at the University of Cyprus (2008–2009) and the University of Ioannina (2009–2018).
His research lies at the intersection of Public Economics, Political Economy, and Economic History. More specifically, his research explores how political incentives, and institutional frameworks shape the design of fiscal policy across countries, as well as the long-term determinants of states’ fiscal capacity. By employing modern econometric analysis techniques, his research seeks to address both contemporary and historical questions, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of how economic policy is shaped by political and social dynamics over time. Professor Kammas’s publications appear in leading international journals, including the European Economic Review, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Public Choice, Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Comparative Economics and Economics Letters among others. His work has been presented at a wide range of international conferences and academic workshops, and he is an active member of international associations in his field.

He received his M.Sc in Applied Statistics (2006) and his Ph.D (2010) from the Department of Statistics at University of Piraeus.
Since April 2020, he serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Statistics of Athens University of Economics and Business.

George Stergiopoulos is an Assistant Professor of Information Systems Security at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Informatics. He received his Ph.D. degree in Critical Infrastructure Protection at software and interdependency levels against cyberattacks from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), Greece. His research work includes the publication of more than 50 articles and papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, specific to aspects of cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems security, and critical infrastructure protection. His experience includes the successful completion of over 30 projects in the field of cybersecurity and data privacy, including projects on the development of cybersecurity engineering algorithms, penetration testing, Risk Analysis and Management implementations in both ICT and Industrial Systems and Networks (ISO 27001/IEC 62443), Data Impact Assessment methods (based on GPDR and CNIL), development of Recovery Plans (BCP / DRP) and other cybersecurity services for private companies and public organizations. He has also been working with the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) since 2019 and the Greek National Cyber Security Agency since 2022, both as a temporary officer and an external expert in various projects concerning cybersecurity regulations, development of state-of-the-art guidelines and support documents for European Union regulations.
Panagiota Sapouna is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Piraeus. She holds a PhD, as well as an MBA and a BSc in Accounting and Finance, from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).
Before joining the University of Piraeus, she held full-time academic positions in UK higher education institutions. Notably, she was appointed as Lecturer in Management and served as the Programme Leader for the MSc in International Business Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. Additionally, she was employed as an Early Career Fellow in Strategic Management at the University of Stirling. Alongside her academic roles in the UK, she completed a two-year post-graduate programme in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and was awarded the title of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the United Kingdom.
She also, held academic positions at the AUEB, where she served as an Adjunct Lecturer and Research Fellow, teaching across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. At the undergraduate level, she taught courses in International Business and Introduction to Management in the Department of Management Science and Technology and the Department of Informatics. In parallel, she has been actively involved as Visiting Faculty in AUEB’s postgraduate programmes, in past and ongoing teaching cycles, including the MSc in International Shipping, Finance and Management and the International MBA (iMBA) where she teaches subjects related to International Business, Strategic Business Decisions, and the Management of Maritime Companies. She is also as a member of the teaching staff at the Hellenic Open University and the Open University of Cyprus, contributing to modules in the broader area of Management.
Her research focuses on strategic management and entrepreneurship, particularly on corporate and business-level decision making, internationalisation strategies, entrepreneurial choices, and decision making under uncertainty. She has presented her work at international conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals (i.e., Journal of Small Business Management, International Small Business Journal, Management International Review και The International Journal of Human Resource Management), and contributed to research and consultancy projects. She has also participated in European transnational research projects and served as a scientific editor and reviewer for international publications in International Business, Management, and Entrepreneurship.
In addition to her role at the University of Piraeus, she serves as an External Examiner for UK higher education institutions, including Staffordshire University and Glasgow Caledonian University, in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship.
In parallel with her academic work, from 2016 to 2025, she held the position of Review Auditor at the Dispute Resolution Unit of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR) in Greece, where she has been engaged in the resolution of complex tax and audit disputes.
Dr. Dimitris Manolopoulos serves as an Associate Professor of Management, at Athens University of Economics and Business (Department of Business Administration). He holds a Bachelor Degree in Public Administration, a M.Sc. Degree in International and European Economic Studies, and a Ph.D from the University of Reading, UK. He mainly teaches courses on International Business, International Management, and Business Strategy. In recognition of his performance as an academic teacher, he has been awarded several times the ‘Teaching Excellency Award’ from different postgraduate programs of AUEB.
His research interests include international strategies, strategic roles and shifts of multinational subsidiaries, the management of headquarters/subsidiary relationships, and the impact of corporate resources on firm competitiveness. Dr Manolopoulos has published his work in international peer reviewed journals; including Journal of Business Ethics, Management International Review, International Business Review, Journal of International Management, Multinational Business Review, and the International Journal of Human Resource Management, among others. His research has also been presented in various international conferences; including these of the Strategic Management Society, the British Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, the European and International Business Academy, and the European Academy of Management. He is the author of a monograph, examining the ecosystem of foreign direct investment, and has co-authored an academic textbook on International Management. He has also published several chapters for international editions.
Dr. Manolopoulos has ten years of working experience in both the private and public sector. He has been employed as a strategic consultant for a large multinational corporation, where he had the opportunity to actively engage himself in major projects, as well as in the strategy department of Public Power Corporation. Before joining AUEB, he has served as the Head of International Business and European Affairs Department of the American College of Greece.
Ioannis Kospentaris is an Assistant Professor of Macroeconomics in the Department of Economics of the School of Economics in the Athens University of Economics and Business since the summer of 2023. He completed his PhD in Economics at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2018. Between 2018-2023 he was an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Virginia, USA. His research interests focus on theoretical and applied Macroeconomics, with applications in labor markets, financial markets, and economic policy. His articles have been published in international scientific journals such as Review of Economic Dynamics, Journal of Economic Theory, and European Economic Review.
Efthimios is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Athens University of Economics and Business. He is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the M.Sc. in International Shipping, Finance and Management. In the past, he served as a member of the Steering Committees of the MBA International and the M.Sc. in Accounting and Finance, and as a Deputy Director of the M.Sc. in International Shipping, Finance and Management. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the Hellenic Open University.
He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting and an M.Sc. in Accounting and Finance from Manchester Business School. During his doctoral studies, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a visiting scholar. Furthermore, he holds a B.B.A. from the Athens University of Economics and Business, the CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) qualification, and a number of certificates from professional accountancy bodies. He is also a Certified Management & Business Educator (CMBE) [a professional designation offered by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS)].
He has received numerous merit-based scholarships from several institutions and foundations, including Bodossaki Foundation, Propondis Foundation, The University of Manchester, Worldwide Universities Network, Hellenic State Scholarships Foundation, Stasinopoulos Foundation (Viohalco), and Chalkiopoulos Foundation. He has also received eight Teaching Excellence Awards from the Athens University of Economics and Business.
His research interests focus on equity valuation, market-based accounting, and forensic accounting. He has published research papers and book reviews in academic journals, such as the European Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, International Review of Financial Analysis, The International Journal of Accounting, Journal of Applied Accounting Research, and International Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Performance Evaluation. He has presented the results of his research at national and international academic conferences. He has a substantial number of publications in Greek professional magazines and has co-authored two textbooks.
Efthimios has significant teaching experience in financial and management accounting, accounting for business combinations, corporate valuation, internal and external auditing, forensic accounting and fraud examination, accounting information systems and internal controls, contemporary research methods in accounting, and public sector accounting.
He is a member of the American Accounting Association, the European Accounting Association, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Hellenic Finance and Accounting Association.
Dr Ioannis Nikolaou is Professor of Organisational Behaviour, Director of the MSc in Human Resources Management at Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece and Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal International Journal of Selection & Assessment. Ioannis has gained working experience is PricewaterhouseCoopers, Greece and Egnatia Bank before starting his academic career. He has written the books “Organizational Psychology & Behaviour” and “Managing Human Capital – Greek Case Studies” (in Greek) and co-edited with Janneke Oostrom the book Employee Recruitment, Selection, and Assessment. Contemporary Issues for Theory and Practice (Routledge/Psychology Press). He has also published in international peer-reviewed academic journals (e.g. Applied Psychology: An International Review, European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, International Journal of Human Resources Management, Personnel Review, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Personality & Individual Differences, Employee Relations, Stress & Health, Journal of Managerial Psychology, etc.), while his research interests focus mostly on employee recruitment, selection and assessment and more recently on the use of social media and serious games/gamification. He maintains active links with the industry through Human Resource consulting projects (GaiaOSE, PeopleCert, Public Power Corporation, National Bank of Greece, Emporiki Bank, Kantor Management Consulting, Attika Bank, etc.) and executive training (e.g., Menarini, Groupama, Metro, OTE Academy, EFG Eurobank, Ethniki Asfalistiki, Misko-Barilla, Lion Hellas, Pfizer, SEAT, Infote, Dodoni, OSE, Metaxas Diagnostics, Intracom, AB Vasilopoulos, etc.). He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology and the Society for Human Resource Management. He is the co-founder of the European Network of Selection Researchers (ENESER), has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (2013-2017), and since 2017 he represents Greece in the European Network of Organizational Psychologists (ENOP). He is also the co-founder of the NGO Job-Pairs, supporting young graduates via mentoring and Chief Science Officer of Owiwi, a Greek based start-up company specialized in the field of gamified assessment.
Charalampos (Babis) Saridakis is Associate Professor of Marketing & Consumer Behaviour at the Athens University of Economics & Business, Department of Marketing & Communication. He also serves as Associate Editor in the Journal of Business Research (ABS: 3-rated, Impact Factor: 11.3), specifically in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics.
For 12 years he worked as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, Leeds University Business School, UK. During that period he also served as Departmental Director of Research for Marketing (2019-2022) and Director for the “MA Advertising & Marketing” programme (2017-2019) of Leeds University Business School. In the past, he also worked as Research Fellow in the ALARM Research Centre and the Department of Marketing and Communication at the Athens University of Economics and Business, from where he also obtained his PhD in Marketing. Dr Saridakis also holds an MSc in Advanced Marketing Management (with distinction) from the University of Lancaster, UK, and a BSc in Marketing and Communication from the Athens University of Economics and Business.
His research interests lie in the areas of consumer behaviour, empirical determination of consumer heterogeneous and dynamic preferences, discrete choice analysis, CSR, marketing analytics, and advanced quantitative research methods. He also works in the broad areas of brand and product line management and is particularly interested in retail, service, and transportation research.
His work has been published in reputed academic journals such as the Journal of Service Research, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Marketing Letters, European Journal of Marketing, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Annals of Operations Research, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, and Transportation Research, among others. His papers have also been presented in international conferences, such as the American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science, European Marketing Academy Conference, Academy of Management, and International European Institute for Retailing and Services Studies Conference, among others.
Dr Saridakis is an active member of the American, European, British, and Greek Marketing Academies, and has also served as the elected National Representative (U.K.) on the European Marketing Academy (EMAC) Executive Committee.
He is a multiple recipient of the “Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence” (2014, 2017, 2019) for his teaching at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
Dr Alkmini Sgouritsa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business (since 2023). Since February 2023, she is also a research collaborator in Archimedes Unit of the Athena Research Center.
She has previously held a position as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Liverpool, (2019-2022), a visiting researcher in the Geo Algorithm group of Google Research, CA, USA, (2021-2022), and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrücken, Germany (2018-2019), where she was awarded the Lise Meitner Award Postdoctoral Fellowship.
She completed her PhD (2013-2017) in the Computer Science Department at the University of Liverpool and her PhD thesis on Algorithms for Game-Theoretic Environment was the highly-commended runner up for the prestigious British Computer Society (BCS) Distinguished Dissertation award (2018).
Dr Sgouritsa’s research interests lie in the fields of Algorithmic Game Theory, Mechanism Design, Algorithms and Fair Division.
Dr. Kalipso Karantinou is Associate Professor of Marketing at the Athens University of Economics and Business. She graduated (valedictorian) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (BSc in Communication and Mass Media), and proceeded to earn a Masters in Marketing, a Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice, and a PhD in Marketing from the University of Manchester.
She has extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies level and has won numerous awards of academic excellence for her teaching. She is also very active in professional training, teaching business executives with great success.
Her research expertise lies primarily in the areas of services marketing, tourism, professional and financial services, servicescapes and e-servicescapes, consumer behavior, resilience, consumer neuroscience, meta-analysis, innovation management, and digital transformation.
She has also won research excellence awards and her published work has appeared in leading international journals, such as the Journal of Business Research, Tourism Management, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Sociology, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing, and Creativity and Innovation Management among others. She has also contributed to a book on Services Marketing (2015), a book on Austerity and Consumption (2023), a book on Ethical Consumption (2023), and to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Management (2014) and the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management (2005).
She was the elected representative of Greece to the European Marketing Academy (EMAC) Executive Committee for six years (2013-2019) and has served as a member of the editorial board and as a reviewer for several academic conferences and academic journals of high standing. She is currently in charge of a strong research team with numerous ongoing research projects including a European EU-funded collaborative project on Managing Digital Transformation.

Research
Research is heavily emphasized at AUEB and at the IBT program. Research is mostly conducted through all the research laboratories that are associated to AUEB. Consultancy is also encouraged, with the objective to develop a better hands-on experience. AUEB laboratories that directly support the research and educational mission of the Program and may host IBT students are presented here.
For more than three quarters of a century, AUEB’s faculty have been conducting rigorous research that has influenced the development of knowledge in economics, business and technology, and have been developing effective academic programs that have shaped generations of managers and leaders in the country, as well as internationally.
With more than 200 resident faculty members in the University’s eight departments, and approximately 50 visiting and adjunct faculty, AUEB is recognized as the leading academic institution in Greece in the areas of economics and business administration and one of the leading institutions in Europe in its fields.
Through publications in top international academic journals, participation in various editorial positions, and leadership of international conferences, as well as through their roles as advisors to large corporations and public organizations, or as leading public servants, AUEB’s faculty create knowledge on critical research issues, promote good management practices, generate innovation in business, and influence leadership through its more than 25,000 alumni and more than 1,000 new graduates every year.
