Our history
AUEB was founded over 100 years ago, in 1920, as the “Athens School of Commercial Studies”. The school was founded through the strategic vision of the Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, who envisaged a business school modelled on the best similar schools in Western Europe, and was funded by a generous donation from merchant Grigorios Maraslis, a Greek benefactor living in Odessa.
Over time, AUEB gradually developed into the leading University in its areas of focus in Greece. Initially offering degrees only on
economics and business, as was customary at the time, the subject areas served by the University progressively expanded to include areas like informatics, statistics, marketing, among others.
AUEB has often pioneered new elements in Greek Higher Education. It was the first University to offer a Master’s degree in Economics already in 1978, a degree that is still offered today. AUEB also introduced the Erasmus program very early on, already from 1987, enabling international student exchange to and from the University. The Erasmus program has soared in popularity over the decades, today enabling more than 500 international students to spend a semester of study each year in Athens.
AUEB is the most sought-after University by Greek high-school graduates, admitting only the top students as evidenced by its high entry requirements, the highest in the
country. Students choose AUEB because of its educational excellence, international outlook, access to high-quality faculty members and strong networking with business and industry worldwide.
Over time, the University has educated many of Greece’s MPs, leading figures in the private and public sector, as well as entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship in particular is a key focus of every program of study at AUEB. AUEB’s dedicated Athens Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ACEIn) ensures students receive entrepreneurial training, access to mentors, facilities and services and also seed funding.
